Student Senate
The Legislative Branch of the Student Association is bicameral. Power is vested in two branches: the Assembly and the Senate. General Assembly The General Assembly is made of every member of the Student Association. For business to be voted on, at least one-third of the membership be present to have quorum. The SA president chairs over the meeting. The General Assembly has the final decision to approve all amendments to the SA constitution. It has the authority to refer business to the Senate, unless there is an emergency. If an emergency, the President may make exceptions and have the Assembly make the final decision. Also, business rejected by the Senate may be repassed by a two-thirds majority of quorum of the members of the Association. It meets at least once a semester. Senate Since 1954, the student Senate has been the policy-making body of the Student Association. It is chaired by the Executive vice-president of the Student Association and made up of senators elected annually in the fall semester. There are four senators from each constituency: Halcyon Hall (women's dorm), Morrison Hall (men's dorm), Community (off-campus students) and four senators at large. The Senate has the authority to approve Association budget and activities, all amendments to the Constitution, ratify appointments and nominations pursuant to the Constitution and Bylaws. The Senate shall discuss business conducted by the Assembly, Executive Committee, Campus Life Committee, the college president, and business presented by the senators. Also, the Senate can amend the Association Bylaws. For legislation to be passed, there must be a two-thirds majority vote of quorum of the Senate. The Senate meets at least twice a month during fall and spring semesters. All students are invited to attend. To be a senator, one must: · Be a member of the Student Association by taking six college credit hours. · Maintain a 2.00 cumulative grade point average or higher during the nomination, election, and term of office. · May not be on citizenship probation during nomination, election, or term of office. · May not be an elected or appointed Student Association officer. The term of senators is September 15 to September 14. The Senate regularly meets every Monday in the Columbia Room Suite 210 in Wilkinson Hall. |
