Gifts of Securities
Gifts of securities often confer significant tax benefits on the donor. For example, contributions of appreciated securities held for over a year are generally deductible at market value, regardless of what the donor paid for the securities. In addition, the capital tax is avoided through such a gift.

How to Notify Columbia Union College on a Gift of Securities
When making a gift of securities to CUC, please contact the Development Director. It is extremely important to have complete donor information (name, address, phone number), the name and type of securities to be gifted (public, private, restricted, mutual fund, etc.), number of shares, and the date you intend to make the gift.

The Development Director can help you make whatever type of transfer works best for you, whether electronic or physical delivery.

Gift Valuation Date
Physical Securities

The gift valuation date for physical securities is determined by the postmark on the envelope used to mail the securities to us. For hand delivery of securities, it is the date the securities are turned over to a representative of the College.

Electronic Transfer

The gift valuation date for securities set to us via DTC is the date the securities are deposited to our securities account.

Mutual Fund Transfer

The gift valuation date for mutual fund units is the date they are deposited to either our securities account or to a mutual fund account in the College's name.

Valuation Method
The value of a stock gift is calculated by averaging the high and low quoted selling prices for the stock as of the gift valuation date. The value of a bond gift is calculated by averaging the bid and ask prices for the bond as of the gift valuation date. The value of a mutual fund gift is calculated using the NAV (net asset value) for the fund as of the gift valuation date.

Acknowledgement of Gift
As soon as a securities gift is received and matched to the donor, the Development Office sends an acknowledgment letter stating the nature of the gift, the gift valuation date, and the gift valuation amount.

Gift Planning
Providing for the future well-being of family and, at the same time, supporting the mission of Columbia Union College can be accomplished by a variety of gifts known as planned gifts.

Planned gifts, such as bequests and income-producing gifts, can provide benefits to family now and in the future, and are gifts that will live on, benefiting CUC for many generations to come. Other gift opportunities, including the use of retirement assets, allow for maximizing the current and future benefits to both family and CUC.

The Gift Planning Director and our lawyers with extensive knowledge regarding tax and estate planning issues are always available to assist you and your attorney or other professional advisor. It is important that all legal requirements be met so that your gift will benefit CUC in the way you intend.

Matching Gifts
Many companies sponsor matching gift programs to encourage employees to support their colleges and universities. Most companies match dollar for dollar, and some will double or triple most donors' gifts. If your gift is eligible, simply request a matching gift form from your employer and send it, completed and signed, along with your gift to the address below.

Columbia Union College
Office of Advancement
7600 Flower Avenue
Takoma Park, MD 20912

If your company has a phone match program, please indicate that you have arranged a phone match for your gift when you send it to the College. Matching gifts are directed to the same designation as your gift unless company policy dictates otherwise.
