Center for Metropolitan Ministries
Training Urban Leaders The Center for Metropolitan Ministry at Columbia Union College uses a hands-on approach to ministry. Students or lay leaders seeking to gain practical training in urban ministry can learn how to meet the needs of a community where they are. Instructors at the center blend classroom instruction, biblical principles, and community experience to ground each student’s education. Students discover how to: 1. Provide leadership on best practices in community based ministry. 2. Provide demographic analyses and needs assessments for churches, community service centers and other services throughout North America and the world. 3. Involve the church in meaningful service and partnership with the community. The Center has developed partnerships with other universities—such as Adventist University of the Philippines and Pacific Adventist University—to enrich their curriculum for this kind of work. “The center exists for teaching and coaching others for leadership and for transforming communities in the major cities of the Columbia Union,” said Gaspar Colón, Ph.D., director of CUC’s Center for Metropolitan Ministry. “It’s not just about ministering to our church members but it’s about the ministry of the church in the community.” CUC’s Department of Religion works hand-in-hand with the center to provide unique programs for students training for ministry in suburban and metropolitan areas.
